  • Asmahan, a famous singer-actress of Syria-Egypt who not only entertained people with her work, but also saved Syria by spying risking her life. He was born in a ship.
  • Asmahan left her husband for the sake of career and after that her life became increasingly mysterious. After some time the dead body of 32-year-old Asmahan was found in a river.
  • Asmahan was born on 25 November 1912. In 1912, Asmahan’s father Fahd-al-Atrash was governor of the city of Demirsi in Turkey, although he had to flee from French troops as soon as Ottoman rule ended. He saved his life and boarded a sailing ship with his elder son and pregnant wife, where Asmahan was born.
  • As soon as the journey was over, Asmahan’s entire family settled in Jabal al-Druze, Syria in 1922. But when the French soldiers bombed their house, the family had to leave the place to save their lives.
  • The father refused to come along, so the mother fled to Beirut, Lebanon with 3 children. When she came to know that French soldiers were looking for her to kill her, she saved her life and reached Egypt via Palestine and started living in an asylum.
  • Her husband had a good relationship with the then Prime Minister of Egypt Saad Jaghlol, so with his help the family got a permit to settle in Cairo city. The PM had also helped him financially.

  • Once Egyptian composer Dawood Hosni had come home to meet his mother Alia. While returning after meeting, he heard the sweet voice of a girl. She was none other than a restless 3 year old, who was humming to herself sitting alone in her room.

Hasan brought with him his second cousin, whom he wanted to show to Asmahan. As soon as Hasan, who had already done 5 marriages after reaching Egypt, saw Asmahan, he himself started liking her. He sent back the boys who came with him and himself put the proposal of marriage in front of their families.
  • Asmahan didn’t want to marry Hasan, but her family didn’t agree. After all, she also became adamant that if she would get married, then on her own 3 conditions. The first condition is that she will stay in Damascus and not in Jabal-al-Druze. Second condition- She will never wear hijab. The third condition is that she will spend the winters in Cairo only. In order to get away from singing, all the conditions of Asman were accepted and after getting married in 1933, she left Egypt. She had a luxurious house in Suwayda, where she used to live.
  • After some time Asmahan gave birth to daughter Kamelia, but after some time she started regretting leaving singing. When her husband Hasan did not allow her to sing, the quarrels escalated. Eventually both of them got divorced in 1939.
  • After divorcing her first husband in 1937, Asmahan moved to Cairo and started recording songs again. Meanwhile, she married Egyptian director Ahmed Badrakhan. However, their marriage broke up within a few months.
  • Asmahan earned a lot of fame in the Egyptian music industry by making a great comeback. Her songs Ya Toyoor, Layali Ayl Uns Phi Vienna and Emta Hatone became massive hits, making her a star singer in the Arab music industry. He got a different recognition for singing Arabic songs by making them western.
  • Asmahan returned to Syria after years in 1941, that too on a secret mission. In fact, during World War-2, Syria was occupied by France. The British army wanted to free Syria, but the Syrian army was stopping them. In such a situation, the British Army sent Asmahan to Syria on a secret mission. They had to convey this message to the Syrian Army that the British Army is about to enter Syria, so do not attack them. With this she will get freedom for Syria. The people of Syria accepted the point of non-cooperation and Syria was freed by coordination.
  • After returning to Syria, Asmahan took some such steps which remained in the circle of many questions. She met her first husband Hasan as soon as she returned and convinced him to remarry. Hasan also agreed and both started living together.
  • After some time there were reports that Asmahan had tried to commit suicide twice. However, the concrete reason for this was not revealed. Some reports claimed that she wanted to divorce Hasan again, for which she attempted suicide. Eventually Hasan divorced her again.
  • A major change in the methods of non-cooperation after divorce is not hidden from anyone. She became a regular guest at the King David Hotel, Jerusalem’s largest, and her expenses skyrocketed. While living a lavish life, Asmahan started climbing in everyone’s eyes.
  • Asmahan the Egyptian Got married for the third time to director Abdel Salem. It was claimed that he had married in order to settle in Egypt. Apart from Asman, Abdel had relationships with many other women. He married Asmahan in Palestine in the presence of his wife. As soon as Abdel came to know that Asmahan was having an affair with the Royal Diwan Ahmed Pasha Hasanen, the two started fighting.
  • One day when Asmahan insisted on leaving the house, Abdel pointed a gun at her to stop her. Asmahan called the police for rescue. In the encounter between the police and Abdel, Abdel was shot. Abdel died during treatment.
  • Asmahan came into limelight after reports of her having an affair with Ahmed Pasha Hassanein, the royal courtier of Egypt. Meanwhile, his getting up and sitting started with some gamblers as well. Asmahan was mostly drunk, gambling herself and partying day and night with friends. The family was so embarrassed by his attitude that most people ended their relationship with him. However, alcohol and cigarettes did not affect her voice and she continued to give hit songs.
  • Due to increasing popularity, Asmahan got the film Intisar al-Shabaab in 1941. In 1944, he got a chance to work in the film Gharam Wa Intekam.
  • 14 July 1944 Asmahan had left the car with a friend, but a few hours later her car was seen submerged in a river near a tunnel. An accident near Mansoura, Egypt caused the car to fall into a ditch and then into a river. The driver of the car, a two-door model, managed to get out of the river, while Asmahan, 32, and her friend, who were sitting in the back seats, could not get out. During the investigation, it was speculated that both fell unconscious due to which they drowned in the river.
  • According to the Arab News Portal, Asmahan’s third husband Ahmed Salem was driving the car when the accident happened. He himself came out alive, but never again came in front of the eyes of the world.
  • His film Gharam Wa Intekam remained incomplete due to his death. That film was completed with a body double. Filmmaker Yusuf Wahbi made Asmahan’s character appear to die in the film in the same way as she actually did when her car fell into the river.
  • To make the film more realistic, director Yusuf Wahbi showed his dead body in the film. There were many controversies, but the film became a huge hit. Asmahan’s songs for this film are among the best songs of his career.
  • Many claimed that Asmahan’s death was not an accident but a murder.
  • Theory 1- Asmahan had received 40 thousand pounds (42 lakh rupees) from British Secret Agency for secret mission during World War 2. When her husband refused to pay her expenses, she was demanding more money from the secret agency, due to which she was murdered.
  • Theory 2- There were rumors that even after World War 2, Asmahan was working for British Secret Intelligence. When he tried to contact the German agent, Intelligence got him killed.
  • Theory 3- German’s secret agency got her killed for having contact with British Intelligence, because they thought she was a spy.
  • Apart from these, several theories have been highlighted calling Asmahan’s death a murder, however, his death remains unsolved till date. Some people cited his family members, his connection with the royal family and his broken marriages as the reason for the murder.
  • Four years before her death, while traveling one day with journalist Mohammad al-Taba, Asmahan passed through the same tunnel where she died. He told the journalist after hearing the voices coming near the tunnel that I feel that I will die at this place. It was a coincidence that he died at the same place after 4 years.
  • After the completion of the investigation, Asmahan was buried in Egypt as per his last wish. Years later, his two brothers Fouad and Farid were also buried near him.
